Tide has been around for over 60 years and has been caring for clothes and families. They help provide the everyday miracle of clean clothing. Here's a little timeline of how Tide began and what they came out with from the beginning till now:

1930's: Tide was born, but it almost didn't exist. Work on Tide began back in the 1930's but the research was leading to a lot of dead ends and researchers were moved to other projects that were more promising. There was one researcher though that did not want to give up and continued to work on the project in secret for four years. By going against conventional wisdom, the researcher had radically increased the levels of one of the ingredients over another ingredient and it had worked. "Project X" was the original name and then when it hit the shelves, it was called "Tide".

1946: Tide created a laundry detergent that had its own laundry category and it was the first heavy-duty laundry detergent introduced in the U.S. When tide was introduced at the time, there were only seven kinds of fabric fibers that existed and only two of them -cotton and linen- were machine washable. Automatic washers were still new at the time so there was only one type that existed around the time Tide was introduced.
How did Tide get its name? No one really knows for sure where the name came from. One legend being told is that the company president was vacationing at the beach while he was taking a walk and he noted how well the morning Tide had cleaned the beach so well. The Tide name had carried the connotation of the powerful ocean tides description of Tide's powerful cleaning ability.

1946 - 1948: "The Washday Miracle" became Tide's advertising slogan

1968: Tide XK was introduced and it was the first detergent that was specially formulated with enzymes to thoroughly break down protein and carbohydrate stains.

1970: There were ongoing improvements to Tide to help whiten and brighten clothes. It had upgraded formulations to improve the cleaning in hard water with helps keep wild 70's patterns and the latest in synthetic fabrics looking great.

1972: Tide had a new advertising campaign called "Swaps" and it had caused quite a stir. Women were stopped outside of the supermarkets and had been asked to trade their box of tide for two boxes of "Brand X" but they had refused to make the trade.

1983: Over 35 years, Tide had a scent. In 1983, Tide had introduced the first detergent that had no perfumes - Unscented Tide. Now people had a choice.

1984: Not only did Tide introduce a new product, Tide Liquid, they also introduced a unique package as well. Liquid Tide contained twice the number of ingredients as the leading laundry detergent and the bottles also had a self draining cap which allowed the product form inside the cap to drain back into the bottle instead of having it run everywhere else.

1988: Knowing that whitening was an important part of the laundry process, Tide had introduced the first detergent with full-strength, color-safe bleach - Tide with Bleach. Cleaning and whitening was done with just one product and it was also safe on colors as well.

1990: Tide had introduced it's first compact powder detergent in an effort to reduce packaging.

1991: Tide introduced their first liquid detergent to include a color-safe bleach alternative that whitened whites like a bleach but it also remained completely color-safe.

1992: Ultra Liquid Tide was introduced as the first compact liquid laundry detergent.

1994: There were age-old laundry headaches like fabric pilling and color fading that were plaguing the consumers in the 1990's. Tide had a revolutionary Carezyme technology that helped solve the problem by keeping clothes looking new longer.

1998: Tide had introduced the first detergent to capture dirt in the rinse cycle - Liquid Tide Clean Rinse. The Clean Rinse technology is a polymer that helps suspend the soils in the wash water which prevents them from settling back on the clothes. This helps to keep the whites white and the colors bright.

1999: Tide had improved their Tide with Bleach formula making it the only detergent that sanitized your laundry, killing 99.9% of bacteria.

2004: Tide with a Touch of Downy was introduced. It offered the same great irresistible clean of Tide with a touch of Downy for freshness and softness.

2005: Tide with Fabreze was introduced. You get the same cleaning technology from Tide as well ans the freshness and odor remover from Fabreze. Tide Coldwater was also introduced and it is specially formulated to clean in cold water conditions better than the next leading brand in warm water. Tide Coldwater can also help you save a whole lot of money on your energy bill as well. Another nifty product created by Tide is the Tide to Go. It was created for those on the go stains. The portable stain remover pen removes fresh food and drinks no matter where you are or when they may occur.
In 2005, after the terrible tragedy of Hurricane Katrina forced tens of thousands of people from their homes, it became clear to the Tide team that during the times of disaster, people turn to the basic human needs, including clean clothes. This inspired the creation of Tide Loads of Hope. The program had anchored by the Loads of Hope truck that houses 32 energy-efficient washers and dryers, has the capacity to wash over 300 loads of laundry a day, free of charge for those in need. Tide Loads of Hope was Tide's first holistic launch of a cause program.

2007: Tide introduced Tide 2X giving consumers twice the stain fighting power with less waters and packaging waste.

2008: Tide Total Care was introduced and became a breakthrough detergent that goes beyond cleaning to help keep clothes looking like new.

2009: Tide came out with a cleaner that washes your washing machine. Something different huh? It's called Tide Washing Machine Cleaner and it helps fight and lift odors caused by residues and it freshens and cleans your water. Tide Stain Release was also introduced. Now it it called Tide Boost. It was the first launch on in-wash boosters that work with your detergent to remove tough stains the first time.

2010: Tide plus Febreze Freshness Sport is introduced and it is specially designed for sports apparel leaving all the clothes clean and fresh. Tide with Acti-Lift was also introduced and the helps lift stains off of fabrics with ease.

2012: February 2012, Tide introduced their newest product. Tide Pods and they are a new way to clean your clothes. They are an all in one packet that contains a cleaning agent, stain remover, and a brightener. There is a multi-chamber design that separates the key ingredients until they hit the wash for a maximum cleaning power.

So, if you are ever wondering how Tide started and wanted to learn more about their products, you got it all right here =) It's fascinating to learn about these company's and how they began. After reading all of this I feel like I have been a part of Tide from the beginning, lol.

What I do have to say though is how great their products are. Tide is the #1 detergent used in my home. We don't use any other brand from the store. I've always loved Tide.
